Laguna, Philippines as a Travel Destination


The Philippines' Laguna is the province where the birthplace of Jose Rizal, the country's national hero, is located. When he was alive nearly over 115 years ago, the trip from his town, Calamba (in Laguna) to Manila (the Philippine capital) would probably have taken him at least 3 days. Nowadays, this trip has shortened to at least 2 hours, depending on your starting point. The difference in travel time can also account for the fast-paced and emerging urbanizing developments now seen in Laguna. Whereas before in Spanish times, travelers would take the boat from Pasig River going to San Pedro, and down the rest of other coastal towns of Laguna, people would find it unthinkable to travel by water to the province. Travelers nowadays typically pass by the SLEX (South Luzon Expressway) that continues to be upgraded, and will be linked with other national and local road networks in the country. What then remains to be experienced in Laguna that makes it the next travel destination for a day or two-day trip by an experienced traveler?
